Architectural Scale Chart: 1/8" = 1', 1/4" = 1' and More

Sep 25, 2026 · Guide

An architectural scale says how many real feet one inch (or fraction of an inch) on the drawing represents. Using the wrong one is the fastest way to ruin a takeoff: at 1/8" scale, a measurement taken as 1/4" comes out at half its real size.

Engineering (civil) scales

Site and civil sheets usually use engineering scales written as 1" = 20', 1" = 30', 1" = 40', 1" = 50' or 1" = 100': one inch on paper equals that many feet. Don't mix them up with architectural scales on the same set.

How to check a sheet's scale

  1. Read the scale under each drawing's title, not just the title block: one sheet can hold drawings at several scales.
  2. Look for a graphic bar scale; it stays correct even if the sheet was printed at a different size.
  3. Verify against a known written dimension (a 3'-0" door, a dimensioned wall) before measuring anything else.
  4. Watch for NTS (not to scale) on diagrams and details.

Scale and PDF precision

On a digital PDF, smaller scales mean each unit in the file covers more real distance. At 1/8" = 1'-0", one PDF point is about 1.33 real inches, so small line-weight and rounding differences show up as fractions of an inch in measured wall thickness. ReadMyBlueprint reads the printed scale on each sheet and sizes its matching tolerance to it, which is why the same 2x4 wall matches reliably whether the sheet is at 1/8" or 1/4". (We found this the hard way; see the real test write-up.)

Quick answers

What does 1/4 inch equals 1 foot mean?

Each 1/4 inch on the drawing represents 1 foot of the real building, so 1 inch on paper equals 4 feet. It's the most common scale for floor plans and elevations (ratio 1:48).

What is the ratio of 1/8 inch scale?

1/8" = 1'-0" is a 1:96 ratio: 1 inch on paper equals 8 feet.

How do I find the scale on a blueprint?

Look under each drawing's title for the written scale, and for a graphic bar scale. Then verify against a written dimension, like a standard door width, before measuring.

What's the difference between architectural and engineering scales?

Architectural scales are fractions of an inch per foot (1/4" = 1'-0"); engineering scales are whole feet per inch (1" = 20'), used mostly on civil and site drawings.
