How to calculate metal studs and track from plans

Sep 23, 2026 · Guide

Metal stud framing is a count, not an area: studs along the wall at a fixed spacing, track top and bottom, and extras wherever the wall starts, stops, turns, or opens.

1. Get linear feet per wall type

From the floor plan, total the length of each wall type. The wall-type legend tells you stud size (e.g. 3-5/8" or 6"), gauge, and spacing (usually 16" or 24" on center).

2. Base stud count

Studs = (wall length in inches ÷ spacing) + 1.

A 20 ft wall at 16" o.c.: (240 ÷ 16) + 1 = 16 studs. At 24" o.c.: (240 ÷ 24) + 1 = 11 studs.

A quick rule for totals: at 16" o.c. figure about 0.75 studs per LF; at 24" o.c., about 0.5 per LF — then add extras.

3. Add extras

4. Track

Track runs top and bottom: track LF = wall LF × 2. Add about 5–10% for laps and cuts, then divide by stick length (commonly 10 ft) for piece count.

5. Stud length

Order studs to the wall height from the wall-type detail — to ceiling or to deck. Heights over standard lengths may need longer studs or a heavier gauge; the legend or structural notes will say.

Worked example: 300 LF of 3-5/8" 20 ga partition at 16" o.c., 10 ft tall, 8 doors, 14 corners/intersections.
Base: 300 × 0.75 = 225 studs · doors: 8 × 2 = 16 · corners: 14 × 2 = 28 → ≈ 269 studs at 10 ft.
Track: 300 × 2 = 600 LF × 1.07 ≈ 642 LF → 65 pieces of 10 ft track.
