What does O.C. mean in construction?
O.C. means "on center." It's the spacing between framing members, measured from the center of one to the center of the next. "Studs at 16" O.C." means the center of each stud is 16 inches from the center of the one beside it.
Why measure center to center
Center-to-center spacing stays the same no matter how thick the members are. It also lines up with sheet goods: a 4-foot-wide sheet of drywall or sheathing breaks on a stud center at both 16" and 24" O.C., so edges always land on something to fasten to.
Common spacings
- 16" O.C.: the most common stud spacing for walls. Three studs per 4 feet.
- 24" O.C.: common for some non-load-bearing partitions and some roof and floor framing. Two studs per 4 feet.
- 12" O.C.: used where walls carry more load, take heavy finishes, or where the design calls for it.
Always use the spacing on the drawings or wall type legend. It can change wall type to wall type on the same job.
How spacing changes your stud count
Base count = wall length (inches) ÷ spacing, plus one for the end. Then add studs for corners, intersections, and each side of every opening.
At 16" O.C.: 480 ÷ 16 = 30, plus 1 = 31 studs.
At 24" O.C.: 480 ÷ 24 = 20, plus 1 = 21 studs.
Same wall, ten fewer studs. That's why getting spacing right per wall type matters on a big job.

FAQ
What does O.C. mean in construction?
O.C. means on center: the spacing between framing members measured from the center of one to the center of the next.
What does 16 inches on center mean?
It means the center of each stud or joist is 16 inches from the center of the next one. That works out to three studs per 4 feet of wall, plus one at the end.
Is 16 or 24 on center better?
16" O.C. is stiffer and more common for walls. 24" O.C. uses fewer members and is used where the design allows it. Follow the spacing on the drawings.
