How to do a drywall takeoff from PDF plans
Read the wall-type legend, set the scale, measure each partition's length by wall type, then convert length and height into sheets, studs and track. Sheets = length x height x sides covered / 32 sq ft per 4x8 board, plus waste. ReadMyBlueprint does the measuring and legend matching from a digital PDF; first plan set free.

Step by step
- Find the wall-type legend. It's usually on a partition schedule sheet. Note each type: stud size and gauge, board thickness and type, sides covered, height.
- Check the scale. Confirm the printed scale against a known dimension, like a 3'-0" door.
- Measure length per wall type. Group by type so each gets its own total.
- Convert to board. Example with made-up numbers: 200 LF of one type at 9 ft height with board on both sides is 200 x 9 x 2 = 3,600 sq ft, or 112.5 sheets of 4x8 before waste.
- Studs and track. Studs at 16" on center is LF x 0.75 plus extras at corners, openings and wall ends. Track is two runs of the wall length, top and bottom.
- Check the ceilings and specs. Legends often miss soffits, furring and shaft walls.
A plan-sheet quirk that breaks things
On the Freeport Square set, the wall-type legend shares a sheet with the door schedule and the two tables' columns are interleaved in the PDF text layer. Extracting the text scrambled them together, so most wall types had no confirmed spec and were flagged instead of guessed. That is why every count in ReadMyBlueprint carries a label.
Where software saves the time
Steps 2 to 5 are mechanical. ReadMyBlueprint measures each wall from the PDF's vector geometry, matches it to your legend, and returns studs, track, sheets and insulation by wall type, each traced to the wall. You still verify before the bid goes out. See the drywall takeoff page for trade detail, or try the drywall calculator for one room.

Proof, with its limits
On a real 21-page apartment set (Freeport Square), 68.9% of walls auto-matched to the plan's own wall legend and 99.8% resolved after one "Confirm all". That is one plan set. The legend on that set shares a sheet with the door schedule, so the extracted text came out scrambled and the rest was flagged for a person instead of guessed. Read the full test.
FAQ
How do you calculate drywall sheets from a plan?
Wall length x height x number of sides covered, divided by 32 sq ft per 4x8 sheet, plus waste. Do it per wall type.
How many studs per linear foot?
At 16 inches on center it's 0.75 studs per LF, plus extra studs at corners, intersections and openings.
Can I do a takeoff from a PDF?
Yes, if it's a digital PDF with a known scale. Scans need the scale set by hand and are less reliable.
Does ReadMyBlueprint do this automatically?
It measures and matches walls to your legend and flags the rest. Your first plan set is free, no card.
