Free drywall takeoff software: what's free and what's not
Most drywall takeoff software is a paid tool with a short trial. What's free: sheet calculators, PDF measure tools, and ReadMyBlueprint's first plan set, which returns drywall sheets, studs, track and insulation by wall type from your PDF with no card. Free calculators work from lengths you type in; they don't read the plans.

Which free option fits your job
- One room or a quick check: a drywall calculator. You enter length and height, it returns sheets and mud.
- A full plan set, one bid: run it through ReadMyBlueprint's free first plan set and compare with your own count.
- Ongoing manual takeoff: a trial of a click-to-measure tool. It ends, then it's paid.
Why "free" usually stops at calculators
A calculator needs you to already know the wall length. On a commercial set that is the hard part: wall types are scattered across floor plans and a legend, and one partition type might be 3-5/8" studs with 5/8" Type X on both sides in one place and a one-sided furring wall in another. A free tool that can't read the legend leaves that sorting to you.
What the free first plan set includes
Your first plan set on ReadMyBlueprint is a full run, not a demo. Each wall is measured from the PDF's own vector geometry and matched to your wall-type legend. You get studs, track, drywall sheets, insulation and CMU block, each traced to its wall, plus a CSV export. Anything it can't match is labeled for you to confirm.
What it can't do
It needs a digital PDF exported from CAD, not a scan or a photo. It doesn't price anything. One plan set is free per account, then see pricing. You verify every bid before it goes out.

Proof, with its limits
On a real 21-page apartment set (Freeport Square), 68.9% of walls auto-matched to the plan's own wall legend and 99.8% resolved after one "Confirm all". That is one plan set. The legend on that set shares a sheet with the door schedule, so the extracted text came out scrambled and the rest was flagged for a person instead of guessed. Read the full test.
FAQ
Is there free drywall takeoff software?
Mostly calculators and trials. ReadMyBlueprint gives every new account its first plan set free, no card, with drywall sheets, studs, track and insulation by wall type.
Can free software read my plans?
Calculators and PDF measure tools don't. ReadMyBlueprint reads a digital PDF and matches each wall to your wall-type legend, flagging walls it can't match.
Does it work on scanned plans?
No. It needs a digital PDF exported from design software. For scans, ask the GC or plan room for the original digital file.
How accurate is it?
On our Freeport Square test set, 68.9% of walls auto-matched and 99.8% resolved after one Confirm all. That is one plan set, not a promise for yours.
